Status Quo

What is it?
CUE and UC are currently in Status Quo.

All terms and conditions of the contract remain in force as the status quo, so the University is required to meet and confer with the union on any proposed changes to the terms and conditions of employment of CX unit employees. This inhibits the University's ability to make any unilateral changes to our working conditions, for example, but not limited to, changes in work rules, etc.

If the University changes any policies or practices that affect your job, please notify the union immediately.

How long will it continue?
CUE-UC negotiations will be held until a contract agreement is reached. Until then, status quo is in effect. The CUE contract expired on September 30, 2008. CUE agreed to two extensions with the University – until October 7, 2008 and then through October 30, 2008. The CUE statewide executive board decided against further extensions.

During status quo period, the union will continue to file grievances when necessary; however, any grievances filed during the status quo period cannot proceed to arbitration (a legal procedure with an outside neutral arbitrator.) The status quo period allows CX unit employees to honor the picket line of other striking employees.

These are some legal repercussions of the status quo. CUE will forward a more detailed explanation to the jurisdiction in the near future. Meanwhile, contact your local CUE office with any questions regarding status quo and ongoing contract negotiations. To reach us, click on STAFF below.
