CUE is You

The Coalition of University Employees (CUE) is the independent, member-run union selected by clerical employees throughout the UC system to represent them, in November, 1997.

CUE consists entirely of UC clerical employees, the people who keep the University going and make it effective. We bargain collectively with the University, individually when clerical employees are having disputes with their particular employers.

CUE encourages participation. We focus on:

  • fairly distributed wages that compensate for what we have lost to inflation,
  • preserving benefits, expanding them to include better childcare provisions, etc.,
  • job security, including meaningful seniority rights and the conversion of casual employees to career status,
  • improving the quality of our work lives, assuring that UC's work rules are reasonable and necessary,
  • equity, including affirmative action and equal pay for comparable worth.

Am I a member?

Your paycheck stub shows whether you are paying union dues or "fair share" fees. If the deduction is described as CUE union dues, you are already a member. If it is described as "agency fee" or "fair share," you are not yet a union member.

Fair share fees cover the union's actual costs of representing UC's approximately 17,000 clerical employees in bargaining, grievances, arbitrations and so on. These fees are permitted by legislation (SB 645) signed into law by Governor Davis in 1999.

CUE Union dues are imperceptibly higher than fair share fees. Full membership is 0.5% of your salary, fair share fees 0.475%. You can calculate your membership dues by clicking here.

Members are entitled to all of the benefits and rights of membership:

  • voting in local and statewide elections or referenda,
  • helping to set the union's bargaining priorities,
  • ratifying contracts and more.
Dues money never supports political action committees (PACs) or other partisan activities.

Most important, the University pays attention to the size of our paid membership. The more clericals join CUE, the more seriously our proposals will be treated at the bargaining table. Our union is much stronger with your support and involvement. We hope you join and help us shape CUE.

Just fill out a membership form available from the web or by phoning our office at 346-3537.

Which jobs are in the clerical unit?

The most common clerical job titles are administrative or (blank) assistants, clerks, and library assistants. In addition, cashiers, public safety dispatchers, word processing specialists, child care teachers and several others.

Clerical employees at the University of California (UC) chose the Coalition of University Employees (CUE) in a November, 1997 statewide referendum. For more information, please see the CUE statewide web site.
